Hungary: another guide ... A cool head
Often Hungary is known only to Budapest. Some people think the Tokaji, someone goulash (gulyás), old hunters know the southern territories and large parks for deer hunting, some lovers know that in the Hungarian plains is the rare great bustard. Others are linked to memories of youth, Hungary evaporate poor girls made available for rental at low prices.
The painting, with the exception (in part) the economic, yet this can be for tourists and novices, or all those traits can be part of a tradition rich and vibrant.
Hungary is a country as vast as the north of Italy, with a population of 10 million inhabitants (and therefore relatively "little" people ") in a territory varied: plains (the famous pusta, written Puszta), hills and mountains. The climate is typically continental, but there is a corner of the Mediterranean: the area of \u200b\u200bLake Balaton.
liberalization that followed the regime change of 1989 led to an internationalization of certain choices, especially economic and, therefore, especially in the city, so today there are many good wines, beers, shops. Remain rather traditional foods ...
As the city, Hungary is the region of large imbalances. The capital, Budapest, has almost 2 million inhabitants. The largest city after it, Debrecen, nor did 200,000. Some areas seem uninhabited .... When
you have a few days to have two choices: a quick tour of an area, where the choice is made on the basis of their interests (nature, traditions, hot springs, swimming in the lake, fishing, hunting, outdoor museums, museums , architectural details, history), or a trip to Budapest to dive in almost all elements in Hungary. Of course the trip to Budapest may itself be a small discovery. Among the tour
remember that Hungary is back for its tradition has played an important rediscovery of traditions, so that today, tourists can visit beautiful outdoor folk museums, including that of Zalaegerszeg and sicorderemo to Szenna near Kaposvár, place on the road to Pécs and where we can go beyond the Danube to the Hungarian national park Ópusztaszer, where the Hungarian conquerors met to carve up the Pannonia (the territory that is now in the Hungarian side) and form themselves into a state. Visit these three sites results in a trip through the south of the country, allowing the park to cross the Danube and Drava, cross the Danube, enter the famous pusta. The cities to be visited in a journey of this type are certainly Pécs and Szeged. Among Zalaegerszeg, Pécs and the Danube, you can choose the path more tortuous, and see beautiful landscapes. Worth maybe a step Szigetvár, the fortress that resisted the Turks in the sixteenth century. with the remains of an ancient and a recent high school building's architectural Imre Makovecz. (Szigetvár you can go to if you come or go back through the Croatia border Barcs). A Zalaegerszeg can be reached from the south, directly across Slovenia, or Croatia or Austria, Graz, in particular shortly after leaving the hills north of Pécs (i Mecsek) and south of the same city (Villányi) are worthy of a wildlife trip. Szeged is rather a modern city, whose core is the late eighteenth century, but had to be rebuilt at the beginning of the twentieth century after a flood of the Tisza, the longest river in Hungary. Both are important cities culture. A Pécs Zsolnay is worth visiting the museum, a museum dedicated to the great Szeged Ferenc Mora.
If we want a less typical of the plain input from Italy is what passes for Austria. The main outputs for Hungary are three shortly after Graz (Fürstenfeld and Heiligenkreuz), you can choose to arrive at Zalaegerszeg, and were close to Lake Balaton, the "sea" of Hungary, or continue to head east to Budapest. Crossing the border but in Szombathely (Oberwart and Schachendorf) starts from the beautiful rolling countryside of Austria (Burgenland) opened to a fascinating landscape in Hungary. From there, 'you can choose to get to Budapest from the north or down towards the Balaton ... or take a middle path. The third and final possibility is to leave just before Vienna to take the M1 motorway that leads directly to Budapest. (By motorway from Udine in 7 hours you can get there.)
The first variant, as mentioned, do get in Zalaegerszeg, from there you can choose a tour of South America (see above) or the Balaton (with Castle Keszthely, Hévíz thermal baths, the peninsula of Tihany) and then choose to go to Budapest or go to the east in pusta.
The third variant does not deserve an explanation. For the second, the possibilities are many.
Typically we head to Veszprém to take the highway and go directly to Budapest. Otherwise you can get right into the Balaton and drive along, always to reach the capital. The alternative is the middle way: a journey through the hills, perhaps to discover some unusual places little Hungarian tourist (at least for foreigners). The medieval church of Jak and isolated a small jeweler. From there you can get to the Pope and choose to tackle the hills of Bakony, summer resort and winter green pearl of winding streets and views "almost breathtaking (almost, for me that I'm used to the mountain). The descent towards Zirc (abbey with famous, beautiful library is furnished in wood) allows you to choose again whether to go to streets or head for Budapest. More the choice is between the north and the Danube, or the south and the Balaton. Travelling north you may wish to visit Esztergom, Visegrad and above all, the site of an old royal palace, and get to Budapest from above. It would be nice to make a short detour to see the church of Zebegény (why? Tourists curious to find out). It can be reached by taking the ferry back to Visegrád and about thirty miles. left. From there you go then to Budapest.
If you choose to go back to Veszprém to the south and from there to Budapest. Often you choose the highway, to arrive first, but if you turn left in Székesfehérvár and head to the streets of Budapest Bicske give the satisfaction of beautiful landscapes ... note the cemeteries without walls!
Finally the last choice is to move then along the Balaton Budapest almost from the south.
Budapest: the great capital, born of the union of Buda and Pest, as everyone knows. But not everyone remember the third part of the city, the Roman, the ancient Aquincum Óbuda in Hungarian. Perhaps there is worth visiting the Vasarely Museum (modern painter, opt-art). Óbuda addition, you can visit Szentendre, a town of artists, with a beautiful core and the famous triangular. To get here and there you can take the train local green, the HEV, square Battyány. It should be noted that in Budapest the best way to travel is by public transport. It should perhaps take a subscription for the days you spend there (for tourists, there are also those of up to 72 hours). They are used mainly tram and metro, in addition to HÉV for longer trips. Buses are a commuter lines. Worth a second trip on the tram, which makes the Danube embankment in Pest, and red trolley buses entering the Jewish quarter (I think the number is 72, for example).
between Buda and Pest, then there's Margaret Island, with the ruins of the monastery where the saint lived. In the right time, the island shows its beauty to the garden-park, with its cultivation of roses. A healthy walk ... from the tram 4 or 6 at the center of the Árpád bridge. These trams are a kind of circular, it deserves to be covered by a Móricz Zsigmond tér Moszkva körtér. Between the two we cross the Danube 2 times, you see the great hotels of the ring road, you pass the Nyugati Station, designed by Eiffel.
Buda is the old town. Danube rises the fortress, or castle (Var), a typical place for tourists. Nice walk, but be careful not to get groped by the acquisitions, at tourist prices.
to see: Matthias Church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the Benedictine cloister around which was built the Hilton (yes, you enter the hotel, and go left) but also the city museum (Budapest Vármúzeum), not so for artifacts and history, but to turn the walls of the first Renaissance palace. A unique show! Leaving from there it may be worth descend from the hillside opposite the main fattening, and reach the Elisabeth Bridge, the white bridge.
If we like the hills are worth, yet the castle (Var) can walk west, the Danube, but that does not look exactly the hills of Buda. In this part of town there's not much to see, it's residential neighborhoods. But with the tram running from 56 Moszkva tér you can get to the rack (fogaskerekű), an institution of the place, which goes up a hill to a small station: the train of the "pioneers" (Scouts), the boys managed path, with a train running through some wooded hills. Last stop is the terminus for a bus back to the city. A long walk in the city. We mentioned
Moszkva tér (get there by subway or red with trams 4 and 6, etc...) Nearby is the Mammut shopping center. If you are coming from the square, crossing Dekan utca, is seen on the first floor of the building a local market which is accessed by an inclined plane, which is worth visiting to learn how to buy the Hungarians. On the second floor, in the end ... there is a shop where they make great coffee. In Budapest, in Hungary and in general, do not drink espresso. Only in this place. Also in
Dekan utca, on the corner opposite the shopping center, is the only place to eat that I attend St. Jupát. Good prices, hearty dishes.
Things to eat in Hungary: Bableves (or Babgulyás) - halászlé - Tokány (is not always ...) - Hurka - Pacal - Palacsinta (the one with the cottage cheese is superb ...); lángos (pancake stuffed with savory , good garlic and cheese ...) but everything is done very well ...
A Pest ... Alternative visits are a chance to do special for the tourists!
the first place among all that I can recommend is the museum of applied arts, Iparművészeti Muzeum. Not for the collections, but for the unique building, beautiful inside and out.
Behind the museum, to the Danube, is worth a walk Raday utca, near the pedestrian street, with cafes and a lively literary artistic activity. I know it's unusual, but I believe that asylum is a beautiful building of this road (Óvoda). A small library (which actually extends to the inside) is in my opinion a good place to buy the guides about Budapest and Hungary, in languages \u200b\u200bmost "drinkable" for Hungarian foreign medium. It is primarily a library of art and architecture.
Ráday utca ends at Kalvin tér. From there, if you move to the Danube (towards the Petőfi bridge) on the left are the big markets (műcsarnok), which is worth visiting for the building, is to buy a paninetto with a little 'of Hungarian salami (salami, many, are sold pre-sliced. Try it!), or whatever ... Excellent prices, they say, you can also find beautiful embroidered shirts and paintings, perhaps one of the few things that are worth buying as a souvenir original Hungarian. Returning on
Kalvin you can follow the ring road, is near the National Museum (Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum), with a collection of artifacts Avari worth a visit. For fans definitely worth entering antique library in front of the museum. Many books are Italian, Latin, more or less ancient, art books. Worth a Stroll
also Andrássy Street, the center (Deák tér) to Heroes' Square (Hősök tere). Whether you go or go back on foot, the trip should be done contrary to the yellow underground (földalatti) ... not need to explain why, try it!
Near Hősök tere is the Városliget, grove city, where buildings have been reconstructed representing all styles of Hungary. Two things there are worth a visit: the statue of Anonymus (at least for those who are fond of Hungary), notary in 1200 that told the origins Hungarians, and the museum of agriculture, if you want to know all about the sweet Tokaji wine. For the rest: Forget, walks in the park, past the great turkish bath and go to the zoo (állatkert). Even those who do not like seeing animals in cages can go there as the entrance designed by Károly Kós decide alone to make you a visit, and once inside is worth going to visit the aquarium (best film) and greenhouses.
At this point the tourist has done:
- walk on the var and visit the museum of the city
- crossing the Danube
-
walk on Margaret Island - visit to the Museum of Applied Arts
-
visit to the markets - visit to museum National
- visit the zoo
- around Ráday utca
- ring (with the tram 4 or 6)
- long walk to Andrássy út
course with all the intermediate steps, which allow you to look around: Budapest a city to "breathe." Furthermore, no account was taken of the walks (Szentendre; train of pioneers) and stops for fascination (sometimes do not go straight to the goal can see unexpected things, in Hősök tere, eg. The embassy building is beautiful Serbian ... behind this, in the embassy may be interesting to visit the museum of oriental arts, etc.)..
A person trained and hastily takes two or three days to do this. If you move slowly, and maybe just try to other corners of the city (eg. Kalvin tér behind is a very beautiful area Károlyi Gáspár Protestant University) there for at least five days.
good all the "new tourists"!
PS any comments to expand the itinerary is acceptable
