This error is typically displayed when you try to install Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP1 on Microsoft Windows 7 or Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2.

Various solutions are available on the Internet but there is also an official Microsoft site: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975055 which consists in the installation of the Cumulative Update for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP 1.

I solved differently (also because 'the problem is me and' presented before the official publication of the solution):

1. Extract the contents of the file SQLServer-2008SP1-KB938369-x63-ENU.exe in a temporary folder
2. Start the command prompt as administrator
3. Navigate to the folder where you extracted the files
4. Launch the 'Setup.exe executable
